We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Yet your child refuses to eat in the morning. Instead of getting a ready made shake, that often is filled with chemicals and unhealthy ingredients (e.g, Ensure, Carnation breakfast shake), why not make a smoothie in your blender. It’s quick, but most of all you can make a healthy meal for your child and feel confident that it will hold him or her up at least until lunch. And, YOU know what ingredients are in there (no additives, preservatives or chemicals you can’t pronounce).
A healthy meal leads to a healthy body, leads to a healthy mind. You feed your car the appropriate gas or oil, why not give your child the best fuel?
So if you are strapped for time, prep the ingredients the night before. All you need is a blender or a food processor!
Ingredients are highlighted for their health benefits (click on them to read more):
- 1/2 pineapple (chop in pieces)
- 4 Medjool dates (pitted) or another natural sweetener (e.g., use less however of : Honey, Maple Syrup, Agave– warning about agave)… avoid too much sugar
- 1 ripe banana
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 300 ml (or 1 1/4 cup milk or non dairy milks like hemp, almond, coconut milk)… add more if needed as you blend…
Optional are the following ingredients BUT these are what make this, or any shake, a super food in the morning:
- soak 1 teaspoon of Chia seeds for a couple of minutes in a little water then add to the mix when its become gelatinous
- 1 tsp of ground flax
- 1 tsp of cacao nibs
- 1 tsp of hemp seeds
Before adding the milk, blend thoroughly until smooth (scrapes the sides as needed to blend completely), then add milk and blend until well combined. Serve in a nice glass or water bottle for on the go.
If your child is like my daughter, he or she will love this drink, especially if you add the yummy healthy ingredients!
